Please use a peer reviewed scholarly journal or article to support response that is no more than 4 years old Discussion 1 It is becoming more evident that nurse performance and decision making affect patient outcomes. Hence, leadership in nursing must focus on creating a work environment that fosters nursing excellence (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). It has been demonstrated that leadership skills such as creating a clear vision and communicating that vision consistently, using good interpersonal skills and communication, and providing ongoing support to nurses are crucial to sustaining a commitment to evidence-based practice (EBP) at the clinical level (Bianchi et al., 2018). In addition to becoming EBP competent, they must boldly model EBP in their leadership and decision making, they must promote EBP, and assist others in creating environments and cultures where EBP is universally accepted and widely supported (Gallagher-Ford & Connor, 2020).
In order to create organizations that are ready to incorporate and sustain EBP, leaders must leverage their power and position in the organization. They need to be aware of the barriers that can develop, and fight for the time, resources and support that is needed to implement EBP. Many of the things that can prevent EBP from being implemented, can be addressed by healthcare leaders, such as providing clinicians with EBP education and skill building opportunities, making space for EBP in the budget, EBP language should be added to the organization’s mission and vision statements, opening positions for EBP mentors and many others (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). But most important, in making their leadership decisions, healthcare leaders should use the best evidence, thereby modeling EBP behaviors, making the best decisions possible, and providing the best practice culture and environment for their team members and patients (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).
There are many types of leadership, Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2019) mention Innovation, Transformational, Servant, and Authentic leadership as being a few of the theoretical models of relationship based leadership. One that resonated with me the most, was the Servant leadership. In this type of leadership the fundamental element are trust, empathy, caring and focused on others. It is important to keep in mind that, the best leaders are first servants, and great leadership grows out of service (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Servant leaders can influence by using the relationships they have with individuals within the organization, and can create an EBP culture and environment that helps build teams that believe in EBP importance and values. Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2019) states that those who are led by servant leaders achieve their full potential and perform optimally, makes this theory ideal for promoting a culture of EBP.
