In Twelfth Night the theme of madness is explored extensively through the sub-plot of the prank that Maria, Sir Toby, and Feste play on Malvolio. This prank hinges on a letter sent to Malvolio. Choose one of the following characters, and write a letter in their voice to another character of your choosing about how the prank turns out in the play.
Characters to choose from:
Malvolio
Feste
Sir Toby
Olivia
Consider the following when writing your letter:
the writing character’s class and gender
the recipient character’s class and gender in relation to that of the writer
the role the writing and receiving characters hold at court
the themes of madness, and gender in the play
Assignment Parameters
Your letter should be between 300 and 500 words long, should show reading comprehension of the play’s plot, show an understanding of gender and class relationships within the play, and show an awareness of the play’s themes. Your essay should not be recounting the plot of the play—Dr. Peiser already knows what happens. This is how she will assess that you not only understood what the play is about, but are also able to extract discussion of social problems from the events in the play.
