Philosophy of Education
Students, you are directed to the book, Teacher of the Year: 400 Quotes of Insight, Inspiration, and Motivation from America’s Greatest Teachers (Sennett, 2003). Select one quote to use as a starting point or introduction as you begin to develop and write your own philosophy. In the event the campus library does not have this book, you may also use a search engine to obtain quotes from well-known and respected teachers. Using a quote as a starting point, you will complete the statements in the chapter as you begin to develop your own philosophy of education:
“I believe the purposes of education are _________________”
“I believe that children learn best when they are taught under certain conditions and in certain ways. Some of these are __________________”
“The curriculum—all of the activities and experiences—of my classroom should include certain “basics” that contribute to children’s social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development. These basics include __________”
“Children learn best in an environment that promotes learning. Features of a good learning environment are _______________”
“All children have certain needs that must be met if they are to grow and learn at their best. Some of these basic needs are ____________”
“I would meet these needs by ____________”
“A teacher should have certain qualities and behave in certain ways. Qualities I think important for teaching are ________________________”
Produce a professionally typed and edited copy of your philosophy of education. Consider the needs of diverse learners as you express your philosophical beliefs about teaching and learning. You are encouraged to refine and rework this document from time to time throughout your future early childhood coursework using the evaluation questions from the chapter. Remember that from time to time throughout your career, you will change, revise and refine your philosophy reflecting the lifelong learning of a professional educator.
