Purpose: Analyze the lyrics of a protest song to better understand its time period and context.
Task:
Choose a protest song from 1960s-1990s, and write 2-3 paragraphs putting it into context for your classmates. You don’t have to be limited to songs on YouTube; however, if you choose a song that’s not able to be linked or embedded in the discussion, make sure you include the lyrics and make specific reference to what makes the song a protest of the status quo in American society. Use the annotation on the History through the Lens of Music: Protest Music as an example.
You might include in your write-up:
background information on the artist and/or band;
a brief description of what is happening in the United States at the time of the release of the song (i.e. what is the purpose of the song);
a description of the lyrics (what makes them a protest).
You can also include how the song was received by critics and/or the nation as a whole; and
other contexts in which the song has been used since.
Afterwards, respond to the songs and annotations of at least 2 of your classmates.
Criteria on which you will be graded:
Your song is a protest song from the specified time period (check with your instructor if you’re not sure if it is)
your inclusion of that song’s video and/or lyrics for reference;
how well you formulate your thoughts;
the resources you choose to show how the song and artist protested American society or a specific aspect or action within it from the 1960s-1990s
