Select one of the following questions and write a 2-3 page paper in Microsoft Word, being sure to includes responses to the questions and subquestions as appropriate. Also include specific ideas from your reading, personal experiences, and additional outside references to support your thoughts. Your paper must be written in APA format, including a title page, in-text citations, and a reference page.
1) In discussing changing gender roles, Balswick and Balswick (2014) claim that this has caused much disruption in the family. They state that the message given to women today is that they must, “have it all” and explain that others have suggested, “…that there is a ‘new momism’ consisting of a set of standards of success that any mother will find impossible to meet…” (p. 205-206). Finally, they propose that, “(h)usbands and wives should be on the cutting edge in working for the liberation of both women and men from oppressive norms” (p. 206). a) What do the authors present as a solution to this oppression?
b) What are your thoughts about changing gender roles today and the authors’ call to work towards liberation of oppressive norms?
2) In Chapter 12 of Balswick and Balswick (2014), the authors state: “Some people make the mistake of magnifying sexual sin out of proportion. To them it is the great unpardonable sin, but this is not the biblical view” (p. 228). The authors take a bold approach to premarital sexuality claiming that they, “interpret the Bible as restricting sexual intercourse to the marital relationship…” (p. 225) but seem to recognize that many Christians are following societal norms for single sexuality. As such, the authors present biblical advice for making decisions about sexuality for singles. a) What is this advice? b) Do you agree or disagree with the authors’ position regarding sexuality outside of marriage? Based on the assigned readings and your own viewpoint, what should be the church’s response to supporting singles as they make decisions about sexuality?
3) In Chapter 14, the Balswick and Balswick (2014) write about styles of conflict management. a) What are these styles? b) How do these styles compare with Christ’s example of handling conflict? 4) Balswick and Balswick (2007) point out that while we will all have a dominant style, the need for flexibility of style in any given situation is great. a) What is your dominant style? b) What about your parents/family of origin? c) If you have a spouse, what is your spouse’s dominant style? d) Did these styles make conflict difficult to manage in those relationships or was conflict typically managed well?
